Top 5 Foods in the South

Hey y'all! Time has flown and it's been waaayyyy too long since I last posted. So I'm back, with another fun blog post! As y'all know, I live in the South, which most people can tell right away when they meet me due to my thick Southern accent. I love living in North Carolina, and I truly consider it a blessing. One of the greatest things about living in the South is the food. We sure do have some good food down here! It's so hard to pick, but I have narrowed down the Top 5 Foods In The South.

  1. Fried Chicken. This is a go-to in the South. In fact, most people, if asked to name one food that represented the South, would probably say fried chicken. I know I would. I know, I know, it's not the healthiest, but oh wow it's so good!
  2. Cornbread. True, this isn't a main dish, but cornbread is definitely sustenance in the South!
  3. Casseroles. No matter what type, the South is all about their casseroles, especially at family gatherings. Some of my personal favorites are chicken casserole, green bean casserole, and squash casserole.
  4. Chicken Pie. Mmmm, this is my childhood. The smell of it is permanently embedded in my brain. Actually, there are two different types of chicken casserole, the famous chicken pot pie with a typical pie crust (my mom has the absolute BEST pie crust in the world), and spooned chicken pie, which just so happens to be the kind my nana makes. I really don't know how to describe it, but I think you put biscuit dough on top? Ooh, both are so good!
  5. Fried Okra. Needless to say, we Southerners love our fried foods. These little forgotten about veggies are delicious coated with a crispy batter.
And, for a fun little twist, we have a runner-up, an honorable mention.

      6.  Pimento Cheese. My sister would not agree with this, as this is the one food she won't touch with a six foot pole. With only three ingredients, pimento cheese is super easy to make, too. Mayo, cheese, and pimento. What's pimento, you ask? Remember those little red things in the middle of a green olive? Yep, that's a pimento. They come in a jar, and are the only reason my sister doesn't like pimento cheese. If you haven't tried this deliciousness, I would highly recommend. Served on a sandwich, on a cracker, or melted on a burger, it's phenomenal. Oh, and did I mention you can add bacon?

I hope you enjoyed reading this! Was there anything on this list you've never tried before? Are any of your favorites on the list? Comment below what you think should have been in the top five!!

  8. Great post!!! I'm a Southern gal myself, but since my mom is from New York my Southern accent isn't very thick (though I can pull it off) xD.
Yes to everything on this list--except I don't think I've ever had fried okra xD. But one southern food that's not on your list but is one of my favorites is Chicken Fried Steak. *mouth waters* And yes, we southern people love fried food. xD
    I loved this post, Caleigh!!!

    1. You should definitely try the fried okra sometime! It is *delicious*. I completely agree, Chicken fried steak (the name isn't confusing at all lol) is the BOMB. My Mom makes the best gravy to with it!!

  9. In the part of NC that I live in BARBEQUE and COLESLAW are SUPER big. (I don't like cabbage so, I don't like coleslaw). Also funnel cakes are pretty big here (MORE fried food). :-)
If you live 20-30 minutes outside of the city of Charlotte (like where we lived up until November last year), PIZZA is your food. All kinds of pizza. XD

    1. Oh, and sweet tea (and I mean REALLY SWEET sweet tea) is the common drink at KFC and Bojangles (both are southern fast food restaurants).

    2. Oh, yeah, totally, Hannah. Sweet tea is very common in my state too. I've never had it, so I don't know why xD.

    3. Ooooh I completely forgot about bbq and coleslaw! They probably would have been on the list, lol. Texas may be known for their bbq, but NC's is top dog, lol! I do love my pizza, but I am not particularly close to Charlotte. If I go, I will definitely treat myself to some pizza ;)!! Sweet tea is the BEST!! I don't think I've ever had KFC's sweet tea, but I've had Bojangles, and it's really good. I think Chick-fil-A's sweet tea is underrated! It is extremely sweet, however, which isn't a problem for me, lol!
Gracie, I cannot BELIEVE you've never had sweet tea before! Please go immediately and try some on behalf of the entire South, lol. You don't know what you're missing!! XD
